What is BaZi (八字)?

BaZi, which translates as "Eight Characters," is a technique used in ancient China to analyse or decode one's life path.

A life path is usually referred to as a person's 'Destiny'.

​

In its original form, BaZi is neither religious nor superstitious.

​

It basically tabulates a collection of data for analysis purposes using one's date of birth and solar time of birth.

​

Master Xu ZiPing (A.D. 907-960) later restructured and expanded on this technique, which became known as 'Zi Ping BaZi' (子平八子). BaZi is also known as the 'Four Pillars of Destiny' in some schools.

What are the Ten Gods (十神)?

The Ten Gods used in the authentic ZiPing BaZi system are not literal 'Gods' worshipped by mankind.

These Ten Gods are essentially forms of energies, or 'Qi' or 'Chi' (气), as defined in Chinese metaphysics.

​

We can derive outcomes or life encounters for a person by studying the interactions (clashes, counteracts, penalties, and combinations) between these Ten Gods inside one's BaZi Birth Chart and distinct Luck Cycles. These encompass a person's fame, wealth, and power status.



Ten Gods Personality & Character Attributes (十神性格)

In BaZi, the words ‘Ten Gods’ (10 Gods, 十神 shí shén) are widely used for almost everything in the universe, be it tangible or intangible, existing or presently non-existing, both known or unknown, that could have an effect on a person's life path or Destiny.

The 10 Gods consist of the following:


In the authentic BaZi system, 10 Gods represent everything in our lives: traits, actions, thoughts, behaviour, personality, things, phenomena, objects, relationships, and so on and so forth. It is almost impossible to list out everything that could possibly relate to the 10 Gods.

​

From BaZi, we can easily get a quick sense of a person's personality and character traits just by looking at his or her 10 Gods. Each of the 10 Gods stands for a certain set of positive and negative personality and character traits of that person. So, the 10 Gods in a person's BaZi chart show their overall personality and character, including both their good qualities and their bad ones. If a person has a certain 10 God in their chart, they will have both the positive and negative traits that 10 God is known for. As to whether one would have more or less positive or negative traits, it will depend on whether that particular 'God' is ‘useful’ or not.
